Pre-school Learning Alliance responds to Beverley Hughes’ announcement on EYFS literacy goals review
Responding to today's announcement from the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) regarding the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Steve Alexander, Chief Executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance said:
"The Alliance, along with many other early years providers and sector experts, has contributed to the formation of the EYFS Framework, through consultation with the DCFS, and today's announcement shows that the government is seeking to redress concerns that have been raised in this process. We therefore welcome the involvement of Jim Rose to review two of the EYFS literacy goals, and the consideration of limited exemption. Such considerations can only enhance the Foundation Stage and demonstrate that the government has listened and acted on behalf of the sector.
Given the preparation and planning that has been occurring in anticipation of EYFS implementation, it is right to maintain the September implementation date. The planned EYFS review in 2010 will reinforce good practice established in what the Alliance confidently predicts will be two years of valuable experience, "ironing-out" operational details of implementation, and beginning to show the transformational benefits of EYFS.
The Early Years Foundation Stage has benefited from considerable practitioner input and generally receives widespread support. The Minister's announcement today, demonstrates that the Department has listened to evidenced and constructive commentary, and taken appropriate measures to redress concerns. Now let us progress, focusing on a positive implementation of EYFS that benefits children and parents, and working to find solutions to the issues of sustainability and low pay in the sector."
