Parents to benefit from major European funding
Parents across the country are set to improve their skills as a result of substantial European funding, secured by the Pre-school Learning Alliance.
Under a series of training initiatives, the Alliance will provide vocational training for over 200 parents in some of the country's most disadvantaged areas to develop their literacy, language and numeracy skills. The programmes have been made possible by funding secured by the charity through the European Social Fund. The grant, worth in the region of £900,000, will help to improve employability, reduce barriers to labour market entry and promote greater social inclusion.
Commenting on the award, Steve Alexander, Chief Executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance said
"Good literacy, language and numeracy skills are fundamental to improving life chances, alleviating poverty and reducing social exclusion. I am delighted that the Alliance has been successful in securing this funding from the European Social Fund. As well as demonstrating the importance of the charity's literacy, language and numeracy work, the funding will have a major impact on the lives of parents living in some of the country's most disadvantaged areas".

Notes for Editors:
- The Pre-school Learning Alliance links 15,000 pre-schools and 500,000 young children and their families in England. Established in 1961 and registered as an educational charity, the Alliance is the national dimension of the pre-school movement. The charity is involved in more Sure Start projects than any other organisation and operates a number of Neighbourhood Nurseries. For information about the Pre-school Learning Alliance, visit our website: www.pre-school.org.uk.
- The Neighbourhood Training project is a two-year programme in five areas. The Alliance will utilise its existing Neighbourhood Nurseries infrastructure to develop hubs for training in literacy, language and numeracy.
